Toyota’s 2-door sports coupe , the GR Supra , was developed jointly with the BMW Z4. US media outlets CARSCOO P and AUTONEWS have reported that production of the current GR Supra and Z4 will end in 2026.
When AUTONEWS asked Toyota about the future of the GR Supra , they replied, “There is nothing to announce at this time.” But when asked for more information, Dave Crist, vice president of Toyota’s North America group, said, “Our partnership with BMW has been successful,” adding, “We are considering what we do next.” Ta. Mr. Christo also said, “If you want to make something, you will think about how to do it.” This suggests that Toyota may develop a future Supra independently, but that may be difficult to achieve.
GR Supra Decrease in unit sales in the US also has an impact
GR Supra sales in the United States have been decreasing year by year, with 6,830 units sold in 2021. However, in 2022, it decreased to 4,952 units, and in 2023, it fell further to 2,652 units. As a result, Supra sales will decrease by approximately 50% from 2022.
Sales of the original BMW Z4 are also decreasing in the United States, with 2,941 units sold in 2019 when it was first released, but only 1,881 units sold in 2023. This decline is even more serious, and if it continues, it will be difficult to continue production.
This report is extremely disappointing. Continuing production of both the GR Supra and BMW Z4 is becoming difficult due to declining sales. In particular, if BMW ends production of the Z4, it is highly likely that the GR Supra will also be discontinued automatically.
It would take an enormous amount of time and money for Toyota to develop the GR Supra from scratch. At this rate, it is becoming more realistic that production will end around 2026. Personally, I would like to see the Supra undergo a full model change as a Toyota in 2026. We will keep you informed of future developments as new information becomes available.
