Toyota Europe has unveiled the latest prototype of the Hilux FCEV, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle based on the Hilux pickup truck. The project was announced in December 2022 , and the first prototype was unveiled in September 2023. Ten fuel cell Hilux prototypes are being built at Toyota factories, five of which are used for road testing and the remaining five for demonstrations for customers and the media.

Toyota and its partners, with support from the UK Government, have now entered an intensive evaluation and demonstration phase.

About the new Toyota Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV)

Toyota is leveraging its 30 years of experience in hydrogen fuel cell research and development to contribute to the development of next-generation technology that will extend driving range and reduce costs. The Hilux Fuel Cell Hydrogen Vehicle (FCEV) uses technology from the Toyota Mirai and will achieve a range of up to 600km. Hydrogen is lighter, which means it can achieve higher payload and towing capacities compared to other zero-emission vehicles.

Europe is expected to be one of the largest hydrogen fuel cell markets by 2030, and Toyota unveiled the Hydrogen Factory Europe in December last year, demonstrating its comprehensive commitment to commercializing the technology.

The Fuel Cell Hilux prototype project will be an important step in further developing hydrogen technology and facilitating the creation of a hydrogen ecosystem across Europe.

Toyota’s new Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) specifications

Toyota hasn’t released specifications for the Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but the Mirai’s powertrain will produce 134 kW (182 PS) at 6,940 rpm and 300 Nm (30.6 kgm) of torque from 0 to 3,267 rpm, with only water coming out of the tailpipe. The regular Hilux’s 2.8 L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine produces 150 kW (204 PS) and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. The Hilux H2’s three hydrogen tanks will likely have a lower range than the Mirai’s, which is around 750 to 850 km, due to the much poorer aerodynamics and increased weight of the pickup.
